2. Determine the degree of moisture of the floor rough using an hygrometer

The moisture content of the floor rough must always be measured immediately prior to laying, in all those points considered significant. It should be noted that measurement of the moisture content should also be repeated whenever any works of preparation or reinforcement, cleaning operations with liquids, etc. have been carried out. A cement substrate or one made with quick-drying hydraulic binders, laid in normal environmental conditions, should be considered suitable for laying the parquet when its moisture content is below 2% in weight. A substrate made in anhydrite is instead considered suitable when its moisture content does not exceed 0,5% in weight. A specific instrument is necessary for determining the degree of moisture: the hygrometer. An "electrolytic" hygrometer should only be used to measure the moisture content of the parquet, while the "carbide" hygrometer is the only instrument capable of accurately measuring the degree of residual moisture in the substrate. It should be noted that with any 4 cm thick substrate and underlying waterproofing membrane, the measurement should be made at a depth of about 3,5 cm. If there is no blanket insulation or if the laying surface is an existing floor, precise measurement of the moisture level must be made in depth to reveal the state of the underlying components. So-called "surface waterproofers" or "chemical vapour barriers" may be found on sale which the manufacturers suggest be used to insulate the wood from the substrate, thereby allowing laying to proceed even in the presence of slightly higher residual moisture than normal. These products, also in relation to the surveys of use and necessary guarantees, should only be used as a last resort, scrupulously following the manufacturer’s instructions. Lastly it should also be checked that there are no structural or finishing components (ceilings, walls, plasters, etc.) which may release excessive moisture into the air or directly to the floor, whether already laid or not.
