3.
Joints in the substrates
No substrate should be cast against the outer walls. A vertical
joint - consisting of, for example, polystyrene, spongy material or
such like - should be positioned at the point where the substrate
meets the walls. Expansion joints should be present in all large
rooms: in these cases the substrate should be divided into fields
with maximum dimensions of 4x4 metres up to 6x6 metres.
4. The quality of the laying surface
The laying surface of a floor rough should be flat, clean and level.
It should also be sufficiently rough for anchoring the adhesive.
The homogeneity and perfect cohesion between the laying surface and
the underlying substrate must always be checked. Any part which is
not perfectly adherent must be removed and the substructure re-made.
Special so-called self-levelling products or special skims are to be
found on sale and may be used to restore the laying surface or to
eliminate defects in level. With any product used to treat a
substrate, the manufacturer's instructions must be scrupulously
followed. If several materials need to be used, preferably use those
made by a single manufacturer - always and in any case checking their
compatibility with all the other elements present in the actual
substrate (strengthening materials, self-levelling products, skims,
surface waterproofers, chemical vapour barriers, etc.). In any case
the moisture content of the floor rough must be checked after
treatment.
